FAQs FOR LITTLE FEET
At GLOBO, we have a great FOOT SIZING guide available to help you and your little ones find their ideal size. It is an easy print out which will allow you to check your child’s size at any time and bring into our stores or even continue to confirm they have their ideal size. If they are older you may want to ask them to wiggle their toes and make sure they still have room at the top for growth. Remember most foot problems and pains in adulthood stem from ill-fitting shoes or poor foot experiences during childhood so it is important to have the best fit at all times. In addition to walking or running, children may stomp, jump, skid, twist, scuff, kick, etc. Despite this activity, however, children may outgrow their shoes before they wear them out, so a child’s growth rate is also a factor in the life of his or her shoes. The younger the foot, the faster it grows. The average life of a pair of children’s shoes is four months, depending on the quality of the shoes. The greatest changes in foot growth occur in the first 3 years. On average, a child will grow up to 12 sizes in just their first three years! This is why doctors recommend getting your toddler’s foot measured at least once every three months to ensure that their shoes fit properly. Shoes that are too small can deform the toes and permanently damage the foot. This may mean getting your child a new pair of shoes every 3 to 6 months, but after age 4, you can count on them lasting in one size for about 8 to 12 months.
This can depend, generally, it is not a good idea to hand down shoes. However, some footwear such as those only worn from time to time: rainboots, slippers and sandals, as long as they are not badly worn or misshapen could be ok. It is not a good idea to “recycle” athletic shoes that have been worn by someone else, because shoes tend to conform to the shape of the feet, and wear according to the specific gait characteristics of the person wearing them. Have you ever tried on the shoes of a friend who has the same size feet, and found it most uncomfortable? Well, it's quite normal being that the flexpoint, lumps and bumps are in the wrong spot. Used shoes will already have molded to the previous wearer’s feet, and will have worn according to that person’s gait. Therefore, the shoes are unlikely to fit someone else’s feet, and may cause blisters or other foot conditions during activity.
Children’s feet sweat a lot. A kid’s foot sweats about 2-3 times more than an adult’s foot! This is one reason why kids are known to wear down shoes faster than adults. Sweating in a shoe day after day (especially if they only have one pair of shoes) will wear on the soft leather lining on the inside of the shoe. After months, it will cause the actual structure of the shoe to break down, literally from the inside out. Sweat is not only a concern for the durability of a shoe, but also because sweaty feet are more susceptible to catching various feet fungus and infections. For these reasons, it’s important to have a breathable shoe that allows the moisture and heat from your child’s foot to escape, letting cooler air in. Clean cotton socks also help to keep feet dry and fungus free. If a shoe looks worn from the inside after only a couple months, try changing out your kid’s socks twice a day.
